Art making is a curious way to address homelessness or poverty-- growing issues in Canada, one of the wealthiest nations in the world.

Art making offers expression, self discovery and skill building. It facilitates participation in community life and in the making of culture.

Sketch creates art-making opportunities for young people who live street-involved and homeless or who are considered to be at risk.

Are you interested in theatre, performance and storytelling? If so, come on out to THE FABRIC OF THE STREETS theatre workshops! A group of actors called “Epic and Everyday” will be joining us for 6 weeks, starting February 22 for twice-weekly sessions. It will be an opportunity for participants to express and explore their voice and creative vision through aspects of performance: we will explore improvisation, the principles of story-telling, text and self-generated scripts, all with a focus on the story-telling power of the ensemble. Performance forces us to face the animal of doubt. Through commitment and action, we can negotiate and overcome our insecurities and fears. By the end of these six weeks, our hope is that participants go away reflecting on the changes they wish to see in their society, and how Theatre can help make it happen. After the six weeks, the Company will compose a script inspired by ideas generated in the workshop. This script will become the basis for a rehearsal process with select returning participants of the original six-week workshop. The result of this rehearsal process will premiere as a work entitled THE FABRIC OF THE STREETS. Every Wednesday and Thursday, 2-4, at Masaryk Cowan community Centre, February 22-March 29.

Come out to see Untitled, a SKETCH exhibition! From Tuesday February 14 to Thursday February 23 (11am to 6pm), some amazing work is showing at Artscape Triangle Gallery at 38 Abell Street (east of Gladstone, south off of Queen Street West)... come see work by Nancy Clemo, Adalla Fricka, Chelsee Livingston, Erick Lopez, Bishara Mohamad, Jonatan M, Ashton Shearer and Zanette Singh!

Make your own patches! Everyone is invited to contribute patches for the Tutu Project - make a 4.5” x 6” patch and give it to Lynn, she’ll sew it to the National Ballet's tutu. Sketch has canvas patches to use as your base, but any fabric or light weight material that can be sewn together is fine…. Draw, Paint, Screen print, Stencil, Sew, Bead, Collage or embellish with buttons! For more information, talk to Sandra (Tuesday Open Studio) or Lynn (Thursday Open Studio)

Apply for a CUE artist grant! CUE is a radical, high-access arts granting program based out of Sketch Working Arts. Over the last 3 years we have granted over $100,000 in direct artist funding to 70 artists involved with Sketch, and hosted a group exhibition featuring the work of 20 CUE grant recipients. This year, CUE will be funding 5 projects (with budgets up to a maximum of $1500). We are looking for a solid team of youth artists to work with: documenting work, attending meetings, completing reports, and providing feedback will be required. Group, and collaborative projects are also applicable. We are specifically looking for work that will cater well to digital, online release. Please email cuegrant@gmail.com to obtain the application materials. The deadline for submissions is March 1. Contact Jason or Zanette at cuegrant@gmail.com if you have any questions, or want any further information. Happy Harmonicas! - CUE

Are you interested in spoken word or poetry? If so, join Craig for the West End Poetry Slam during Open Studio on Tuesdays! Attendees will explore Spoken Word Artists, Rap---its history and place in written expression, develop literary techniques, examine the significance of personal experience in Spoken Word, and discuss how social issues can be channeled into original Spoken Word performances.
