Sketch is and always has been a collaboration of many influences. We want the organizational structure of Sketch to best reflect the diversity of voices that play a part in making it what it is. We seek to facilitate the growth of Sketch as a creative organization that evolves, adjusts and makes necessary changes to serve youth better.
HISTORICAL GOVERNING STRUCTURE
For the first five years Sketch has been under the umbrella of Imago. Six individuals from various fields provided resources, support and direction to Phyllis Novak as she developed the concept of Sketch. This was invaluable sponsorship as it provided us the time we needed to develop Sketch without the legal pressures of Incorporation.
Sketch initially operated with the assistance of a volunteer Advisory Committee. Six individuals from various fields were a part of resourcing Sketch on many levels and providing support and direction when needed particularly providing support to Phyllis Novak as she developed the concept of Sketch. Many of these members are still strong supporters of Sketch and one is now the Secretary of our Board.
On January 29, 2002, Sketch received its legal incorporation as a nonprofit organization. We have applied for charitable status and are expecting that to be acquired by end of 2002. While we now hold our own governance through a Board of Directors, SKETCH will continue to use IMAGO's charitable number for tax receipts until charitable status Is received.
In the early days of development, the founder of Sketch received advice from a group of youth called The Working Group. Working Group members were active in guiding and evaluating the creation of the earliest projects undertaken by SKETCH. This group of dedicated youth passed the torch to a new generation of Working Group members in the spring of 2001. This group offers input on programming at SKETCH, and conducts an annual peer evaluation to inform staff decision making.
