SUMMARY:My Public Living Room: A Toronto Mans Reflection Vol I: Lokey Care Booth
DESCRIPTION:The first of two public events hosted by Good Guise through the My Public Living Room project by Making With Place Public Art Series. \nOn Friday October 15 between 5pm – 7pm \, My Public Living Room will host a conversation around Care for Black Brown and Indigenous Men. \nHosting this special conversation will be members of the Good Guise\, Across Boundaries (acrossboundaries.ca)\, and local community members with special guest performances. \n  \n \nThe topic of isolation has been weighed on many throughout the lockdown period of the Pandemic that started in 2020. Sitting with his own thoughts during the COVID-19 Pandemic\, The Legend of Balu\, a local previous Eglinton West resident\, started utilizing his Instagram page @atorontomansreflection as a way to share his thoughts that he was forced to sit and face during that period of time. The name is self explanatory – Toronto been his home. \nThe more Balu started to share his reflections\, to his surprise many people started connected with his words. As the notifications on his phone started piling up with tags and shares across different social media platforms\, my words caught the attention of Charlemagne the God\, who ended up reposting his reflections on his page. If anyone knows Charlemagne the God\, they know he is notorious for his opinions and views spreading throughout pop culture quickly\, allowing him to share his internal thoughts with people across the world. Prints will be available for sale – 50% proceeds will be donated back to Eglinton West. \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nLogan Marrast aka lokeyshots; BA Marketing\, Photographer & Creative Director. \nBorn and raised in the Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue area\, Logan’s passion for story telling started in Little Jamaica. Through youth programs and community mentorship\, Logan had many different role models. These positive influences\, particularly in black men\, assisted in developing his character and his interest in philanthropy. \nFast forward to his study at Ryerson University\, where he was introduced to portrait photography. Logan found himself harnessing the art form to tell stories of humanity. In his community\, often black/brown men are taught to suppress their emotions. He observed that neglecting self expression has several negative impacts. He grew zealous about how these “adverse effects” turn in to consequences for men who look like him. Through portrait\, he hopes to portray the similarities black/brown men share with people and not the differences. \nLokey will be reimagining a pay phone booth as a mental health check in phone booth centering support/healing for racialized men. \nMaking With Place Public Art Projects is SKETCH’s first series of public art in which artists consider the complexities of place while engaging with communities in thoughtful community-engaged design and production processes.
