SUMMARY:Queering Place: Friends of Queering Place
DESCRIPTION:We turn to our community to ask the question “what makes a place queer?” With the help of friends from the Kapwa Sanctuary\, PartyPeople\, and others\, we explore what queerness means as artists\, performers\, healers and community members. \nThese are some of the themes bound to come up in the work and discussion: \n\nDecolonization\nDrag and gender performance\n\nQueering Place is presented as part of Making With Place – SKETCH’s first series of public art projects in which artists consider the complexities of place to animate\, amplify and archive creative histories and voices of people and places on the margins. Learn more about all four projects at www.sketch.ca/publicart \nPRACTICE PHYSICAL DISTANCING and WEAR A MASK!! \nWE MUST BE VIGILANT IN THESE PRACTICES TO KEEP EACH OTHER SAFE. SKETCH is committed to following all Provincial and Municipal COVID-19 protocols\, rules and regulations in order to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. Screening forms will be sent to registrants 24 hours before the event. Please fill out the screening form. While it is an outdoor event\, we ask anyone attending the event to wear a mask to help stop the spread of COVID-19. SKETCH will have masks and hand sanitizer on hand. We thank you for your cooperation and support in helping to ensure community safety. \nThe installation is located within a grassy park space (which may be challenging for some mobility devices)\, connected by a gravel & paved pathway. It is possible to drive directly up to the installation via Fort York Drive. There are all gender washrooms & potable water available at the Fort York/Bentway visitor centre during operating hours\, reached by stairs on the east side & fort york drive on the west side. \nThe installation includes tactile\, visual & auditory components. \nThe nearest transit options include: \n– 511 Bathurst street car\, which is not wheelchair accessible\, travelling west and requires walking up an incline through the Bentway. \n– The 29 Dufferin kneeling bus then traveling east 9 minutes along the sidewalk to the Bentway. There is a slight incline up Fort York drive towards the park. \n– The 63 Ossington kneeling bus then travelling south on Strachan which involves an incline & decline \nQueering Place is part of ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art 2021 – 2022\, and funded by the Government of Canada\, City of Toronto\, and Canada Council for the Arts. There will be food plus a special performance by music/fashion duo MOMxWYFE! \nPlus a special panel discussion on the film Inner Hobo from 5-6PM. \nThe entire exhibition will run from April 14 until May 6 which will end with a community feast and procession. \nProduced in partnership with The Bentway.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nA Toronto Mans Reflection: The Lokey Care Booth featuring local artist\, Logan Marrast (aka @Lokeyshots) \nCurated by The Good Guise A Toronto Mans Reflection reflects key messages and creations by Torontonians exploring the concept of Man. Proud to present the Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue area born and raised\, Logan Marrast (aka @lokeyshots)\, who reimagines a phone booth as a mental health check-in that centres care\, support\, and healing for racialized men. Black/brown men are taught to suppress their emotions and to neglect vulnerable self-expression. This brand of masculinity has adverse consequences for men who look like him. The images presented in the phone booth display staples in Logan’s community and possible models for care: men who are leaders within their own right\, who took the time to listen\, who did not judge\, but more importantly\, who lent a helping hand and modelled vulnerability and care. The phone booth is a symbol of the CARE all racialized men need. It demonstrates the differences that can bring us together and showcases our ability to express ourselves and not feel alone. The Lokey care booth provides a space for Black/brown men to be listened to\, to seek help\, and not be shunned or shamed. \n  \nA Toronto Mans Reflection: The Lokey Care booth is a collaborative creation of the Good Guise\, who curated My Public Living Room\, a project with SKETCH Working Arts. Working with metal\nallows Priscilla to engage in the alchemical process of transformation—immersing it\nin flames\, tempering it with water\, shaping it with force\, and allowing oxidation to\nnaturally enhance its texture over time. \n \n  \nArt by Olympia @artbyolympia\nOlympia Lynn Trypis is a queer self-taught multidisciplinary artist and activist inspired by nature and social justice. \n \n  \nDairy Sam @dairy.sam\nSam is a multi-media/multi-disciplinary artist from Toronto. “I moved to Canada 7 years ago! I am Brown\, Queer and Disabled. A lot of those identities come up in my storytelling! I love storytelling\, using characters\, colors\, and surreal visuals. I use many mediums\, such as painting\, illustration\, print and zines\, ceramics\, poetry\, textiles\, digital such as film and animation\, and am learning even more new mediums!” They are also the brilliant artist behind the event’s cover image. \n \n  \nSapphira @thamusicmystic\nSapphira is  a physically disabled\, neurodivergent Queer black femme from Toronto\, Canada\, and a multifaceted artist with a celestial twist. She says\, “I possess a unique talent as a Tarot and Oracle reader. I’m an astrologer and numerologist with a desire to weave these divination arts into my practice. I’m publishing my first Oracle deck for commercial use\, sharing my intuitive insights with the world. Through my music\, my cards\, and my astro exploration\, I strive to weave tales of love and healing. My journey is not just a melody but a symphony of artistic pursuits\, awaiting your eager ears and open hearts.” \n \nSilkfang @silkfang\nSilkfang is created by E Li\, an artist and filmmaker traversing queer\, trans\, and racialized identity politics. His work gestures towards a horizon defined by the radical embodiment of queer\, disabled\, racialized lives. Studied in filmmaking\, he works in video\, as well as in graphic design. As a genderqueer Chinese artist\, he strives to expand creative growth opportunity for queer\, Asian\, and otherwise marginalized communities. \n \n  \nSun @lilsun.draws\nSun is a wiggly inter-dimensional being in this wiggly world. They are a Neurodivergent\, Nonbinary\, Queer Tamil Artist\, Illustrator\, and Graphic Designer born in SRN Puram\, Tamil Nadu\, raised in Scarborough. They work with a multitude of media to create visual representations of their lived experiences\, musings\, and feelings. The crafts they are most experienced with are drawing and painting both traditionally and digitally\, as well as sculpting. Sun’s work is heavily inspired by their Tamil heritage\, nature\, and their relationship with all beings. They love to help others and wish to make the world a better place through their work and interactions. Sun works with a variety of groups to paint beautiful murals\, clay sculptures\, and design websites & graphics for small businesses and community groups. \n \n  \nWhitney’s World @whitney_c_\nWhitney is a multifaceted artist with career aspirations of expressing creativity through various art forms . She’ll be vending paintings on canvas\, glass and denim fashion\, plus knitted bags and jewelry.
